Break the Ice Mental Health

The Hockey NL Female Council are proud to support the Maddy Murphy Memorial Fund and we are asking players to participate in fundraising for this great cause. Maddy Murphy was an elite athlete, a former friend and teammate of two of our HNL Female hockey alumni – Emily Parsons and Jessica Davis, and she was from Saint John, New Brunswick.

In September of 2019, Maddy lost her battle with mental illness. Since then, her family and friends have created the Maddy Murphy Memorial Foundation (#MM81). The mission of this memorial fund is to support the mental health community by offering scholarships, raising awareness and promoting education to end the stigma of mental health.

This year, Emily and Jessica have started the Break the Ice Mental Health campaign here in Newfoundland, to start conversations about mental health and raise funds for the Maddy Murphy Memorial Fund.

Maddy’s battle has ignited a spark in her family and friends and we hope that by fundraising for the Maddy Murphy Memorial Fund, we can help raise awareness about mental health and help others who are struggling.

We are asking all our female teams to participate and raise money for this very  worthwhile cause prior to the Provincial Tournaments. It is a great way for our young female players to help raise awareness of mental health and help to support this very good cause.

The team who raises the most money will win HNL Female Hockey toques for all team members. Every pledge you collect helps to raise awareness and start important conversations to end the stigma surrounding mental illness.

More information about this can be found on the Maddy Murphy Memorial Fund official website or the Break the Ice social media pages.
